5 steps to your personal growth

growth,

Personal growth sounds nice and everything, but we all know it is not that easy in practice, and sometimes it does not even feel right. Sometimes it happens that we even hold ourselves back from growing. We just don’t allow our growth. This is incredibly sad because growing is the best gift we can give to ourselves.

To unfold your true potential, you need to get out of your own way. And that’s why this guide is designed to help you to allow your personal growth to happen.

How are we standing in our own way?

Now that we’ve made the step out of our comfort zone, the next hurdle is a confrontation. The new challenges we encounter confront us with fear. We become insecure and it becomes incredibly easy to fall back into self-doubts, like telling ourselves that “we can’t”. Once we’re here, we start to believe it’s not the right thing. We start doubting our decision, we begin contemplating to go back. We think we are not ready and we may even regret the decision.

And like this, we block our own growth, standing in our own way.

But we can change that. We can learn to adjust our mindset to open up for thrilling challenges. We can learn to allow our growth to happen.

The fear is lying

Change scares us. We may start doubting ourselves because we think we are not ready, we can’t do it and we will never learn. But those are only lies that the fear tells us to keep us in our comfort. Unfortunately, we often believe those lies, and we don’t necessarily see that they are nothing more than limiting beliefs holding us back. Learn how to overcome limiting beliefs in this post.

The ultimate 5-step-guide to allowing your growth to happen

1. Realize your head is limiting you

The first step to allowing growth to happen is to detect the fear and the negative thoughts you’re experiencing and realize that they are only in your head. They are most definitely not reality. Those negative thoughts are like a filter before your eyes that makes you think they are real. But that’s just not the truth. The thoughts are only in your head, and you can decide not to believe them.

2. Think about why you should believe those thoughts

To decide to not believe the self-limiting thoughts, you first should reflect on why you actually should believe them. “Why shouldn’t I be good enough? Why should I not be able to learn?” Can you give any valuable answer to these questions? No? Well, if you can’t find any arguments for those statements to be true… then they are most likely wrong.

3. Free yourself of expectations

The catch about new challenges is that you may want too much too quickly. You may set immense expectations for yourself and it’s easy to fall into the trap of perfectionism.

You may also compare yourself to other people and think that you will never be able to become “as good as them”. But the important thing is: everybody starts small. You may feel completely overwhelmed in the beginning, but this is not bad, it is just how it should be. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it is only because you have new input, and every new information needs to settle. Don´t expect to understand everything ríght away. Take and embrace what you get and decide to learn from it.

Be reasonable and don´t expect from yourself to be perfect from the start. Allow yourself to be a student. Get rid of expectations and go with the flow instead, because then you will never be able to “fail” any expectation.

4. Trust yourself and the process

To calm your thoughts and your fear, you need to learn to trust yourself. You are just fine the way you are and it is completely okay and even normal to be scared and to feel overwhelmed. It is what opens the doors to your growth. Everything is just right the way it is. Trust in yourself that you will master whatever you want to accomplish, and trust the process. You will get there. Everything will fall into place if you just trust.

5. Turn the thoughts around

Take your negative thoughts and turn them around, one by one.

  • “I am scared” – “I am not scared, I am just terribly excited to learn something new, and it is thrilling.” I invite you to watch this inspiring video from Mel Robbins: The Secret to Stopping Fear and Anxiety (That Actually Works)
  • “I can´t do this” – “I can do this, because I am strong and I am ready to learn, and I am completely fine the way I am.” You can do what you believe you can. So start believing!
  • “I will never be like him or her” – first, you are a different person and yes, you will never be like him or her, but you will be great in your way, and you will be your best, and you won´t need any comparison. Read here why comparison attacks your happiness and how to stop it.
  • “This is too much for me” – “I am overwhelmed, but that´s great. It gives me the motivation to learn”
  • “I am not ready.” – “I chose to do this, I stand behind my decision and I am ready right now.”
  • “I will never learn this” – “Life is a huge learning experience, and it´s a gift that I can learn, so I will use that gift”
If you still want to give up and go back into your comfort…

…Then take a moment to think about what brought you to the decision to do what you are doing right now. Why did you feel the need to do it? What were you thinking back then? Was it a desire for growth, a desire for a new challenge, the motivation to start a new chapter? What was it that was so strong that it got you out of your comfort? Remember that you take every step in life for a reason, and sometimes it helps to recall what you were thinking at the beginning to bring you back into the right mindset.

Now take what you already have and what you get, suck it up, embrace the new opportunities and get focussed on your growth!

This is what has been waiting for you. You will learn, and you will grow.
